In a revealing interview with the “Wall Street Journal Magazine,” Hollywood icon Angelina Jolie shared candid insights into her life, reflecting on her career, healing after her separation from Brad Pitt, and her perspective on the entertainment industry.
Titled “Angelina Jolie Is Rebuilding Her Life,” the article delves into Jolie’s personal journey and her views on Hollywood, the city that catapulted her to stardom. The actress, known for her humanitarian work as much as her acting prowess, didn’t mince words when describing Tinseltown.
“I grew up in quite a shallow place,” Jolie remarked about Hollywood. “Of all the places in the world, Hollywood is not a healthy place. So you seek authenticity.”
The daughter of actor Jon Voight, Jolie emphasized that growing up in Hollywood didn’t make her overly impressed with the industry. “Because I grew up around Hollywood, I was never very impressed with it. I never bought into it as significant or important.”
Reflecting on her journey, Jolie expressed reservations about entering the entertainment industry in today’s climate. “I wouldn’t be an actress today,” she revealed, citing the changing expectations of public exposure. “When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”
The actress, who has experienced heightened public scrutiny since her divorce from Pitt seven years ago, acknowledged the challenges her family faced during that period. “We had to heal,” she said, referring to her family’s journey. “There are things we needed to heal from.”
Jolie, known for her stoic and adventurous public persona, acknowledged the public’s fascination with certain aspects of her life. “Since I was young, people liked the part of me that’s pretty tough and maybe a bit wild—that’s the part that I think people enjoy,” she stated. “I’m not the one [who] you want to hear about my pain or my sadness. You know, that’s not entertaining.”
In the future, Jolie, an avid traveler and supporter of diverse causes, revealed her intentions to relocate from Los Angeles and dedicate more time to her residence in Cambodia. “It’s part of what happened after my divorce,” she explained. “I lost the ability to live and travel as freely. I will move when I can.”
Jolie’s insights provide a rare glimpse into the inner workings of Hollywood and the toll it can take on even the most resilient of personalities. As she continues to rebuild her life, the actress and activist remains committed to authenticity and healing, both on and off the silver screen.
