Edna, Texas – December 11, 2023
In a harrowing turn of events, the Edna Police Department has made an arrest in connection with the brutal slaying of 16-year-old cheerleader Lizbeth Medina, whose lifeless body was discovered in the bathtub of her Texas apartment earlier this week. The suspect, identified as Rafael Romero, was apprehended in Schulenburg, Texas, by the Texas Rangers on Saturday.
Romero now faces charges of capital murder, a crime that could render him eligible for the death penalty if convicted. The Texas Rangers, an investigative unit under the state’s Department of Public Safety, transported Romero to the Jackson County Jail following his arrest.
Lizbeth Medina, a vibrant cheerleader at Edna High School, harbored dreams of becoming a nurse, as revealed by her aunt, Ana Medina. Describing Lizbeth as outgoing, confident, and selfless, Ana shared, “She was always there for everybody — charming, young, and full of energy. That was all just cut short.”
The tragic discovery unfolded when Lizbeth’s mother, Jacqueline Medina, returned home on Tuesday evening to find her daughter unresponsive in the bathtub, as detailed in a police department news release. Responding officers confirmed the young cheerleader’s untimely demise.
Community members gathered at a Saturday night vigil to mourn the loss of Lizbeth Medina, emphasizing the impact her vibrant spirit had on those around her.
Edna Police Chief Rick Boone expressed dedication to seeking justice for the teenager in a heartfelt Facebook post on Sunday. “As you know, we are a small department, and this can call for a great demand to be put on my officers,” Boone wrote. “They not only stepped up during their own shifts but worked many hours willingly on their days off and past their own shift times.”
Born and raised in Nebraska by a single mother, Lizbeth had relocated to Texas approximately a year ago. In response to the heartbreaking incident, her family initiated a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for funeral and memorial expenses. “She was loved by many, but most importantly, she is loved and will be missed by the family,” expressed Ana Medina on the fundraiser page.
The arrest of Romero brings a measure of closure to a community grappling with grief, while the pursuit of justice continues to unfold in the wake of this devastating loss.
