On Thursday when “Deputy Eric Minix of the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office” lost his life during a high-speed police chase that spanned state lines. The pursuit, involving a stolen vehicle, took a tragic turn on Interstate 85 as it crossed into Chambers County, Alabama.
Deputy Minix, dedicated to his duty, was pursuing the stolen vehicle when he was fatally struck by a City of Lanett Police Department vehicle, according to announcements from both law enforcement agencies. The incident occurred during the apprehension of the suspect, and Minix was pronounced dead upon reaching a nearby hospital.
The City of Lanett is situated in Alabama along the Chattahoochee River, marking the state border with Georgia, approximately 80 miles northeast of Montgomery.
While the authorities did not disclose the identity of the officer involved in the tragic collision, Lanett police revealed that the officer responsible had been placed on administrative leave pending a thorough investigation. The stolen vehicle’s driver is reported to be in custody, though the suspect’s name has not been released.
In a Facebook statement, the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office requested thoughts and prayers for all those involved in the heartbreaking incident. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has taken charge of investigating the fatal crash, although attempts to reach them for further details were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
Deputy Minix, who had previously served with the Tyrone Police Department, joined the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office as a dedicated K9 officer. In a heartfelt statement, the agency expressed the profound loss of not only a respected deputy but also a cherished friend.
“We have lost a good deputy. We have lost a good man. We have lost a good friend,” the agency’s statement read.
