NBA Legend Dwyane Wade Opens Up About Overcoming Infidelity and Seeking Therapy in His Relationship with Gabrielle Union

September 22, 2023

Celebrity power couple Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union have faced their fair share of media scrutiny over the years, but it’s their willingness to address personal challenges that have made headlines recently. The couple’s support for their teenage daughter Zaya’s gender transition sparked both admiration and backlash from various quarters. However, this wasn’t the only trial they faced in their relationship. In a candid conversation with former FS1 host Shannon Sharpe, Dwyane Wade revealed how his infidelity had a profound impact on his relationship with Union.

Wade and Union first crossed paths in 2007, but it wasn’t until 2009 that they officially began dating. The couple made their relationship public the following year. However, in early 2013, they decided to take a brief break due to their hectic schedules. It was during this period that Wade reportedly fathered a child with reality TV star Aja Métoyer. Wade would later disclose to Shannon Sharpe that coming clean about his infidelity to Union was a more emotionally taxing experience for him than losing in the NBA Finals.

In a June episode of Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, Wade was questioned whether disclosing his unfaithfulness to Union was more agonizing than experiencing defeat in the NBA Finals in 2011 and 2014. Without hesitation, Wade confirmed that having that conversation with Gabrielle was indeed more heart-wrenching than his two NBA Finals defeats.

“It’s way harder [than losing in the Finals] to have a conversation with my now-wife…about it. You try to think about everything possible…It’s all scary…You know this is gonna hurt someone you’ve been building a relationship with, a life with!… I couldn’t have gotten through that moment without her sticking with me. That was a rough time for me. You’re keeping something from the people you love and it’s heavy,” Wade explained.

Their relationship, like any, has its imperfections, and they have chosen to address them through therapy. Wade emphasized, “It hasn’t been perfect. It will never be perfect. We go to therapy, been to therapy. We’ve had shouts about it, regular conversations about it. It’s going to continue to be something that I have to work at and work on.” He also expressed his deep regret that his son has to bear the burden of his mistake despite having done nothing wrong.

Despite the challenges they faced, Wade and Union decided to tie the knot in 2014 after signing a prenuptial agreement. Union clarified that the agreement symbolized their commitment to each other and not any financial gain. Their journey continued with the arrival of their daughter Kaavia James in 2018, following years of struggling with infertility.

In a world where celebrity relationships often remain carefully curated behind closed doors, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union’s openness about their struggles and their commitment to working through them is a testament to their enduring love and resilience.
