The young victim of rape involved in the case concerning Nepal’s cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane has reportedly made a suicide attempt on the eve of the anticipated final hearing. The minor victim, who is central to the case implicating prominent Nepal cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane, tried to end her life as the expected final verdict loomed closer. The police have shared this distressing news.
Lamichhane, the celebrated cricketer who captained the national cricket team, is facing accusations of repeatedly raping a minor in a hotel room in Kathmandu on August 21. The police have confirmed that the victim, identified as ‘Gaushala-26’ in the case, overdosed on medication and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Kathmandu.
According to reports from the spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police Range, Kumod Dhungel, the victim took medication beyond the recommended dosage, possibly due to persistent panic attacks. The victim’s condition is currently stable, and she is under observation in a private hospital.
The victim’s suicide attempt occurred as the final verdict on the case was scheduled to be announced the following day. The hearings for the case have been repeatedly postponed due to various reasons, causing delays in reaching a final decision. The victim, who is still a teenager, is presently under the care of a women’s shelter and is receiving psychological counseling.
The Kathmandu District Court is expected to deliver its judgment on the case the next day. Meanwhile, Sandeep Lamichhane, the accused cricketer, is making arrangements to travel to Pakistan to join Nepal’s squad for the Asia Cup, set to commence on August 30. However, his departure amid the uncertainty of the court verdict has raised concerns that the hearing might be deferred again.
The case has faced numerous delays, with previous hearings suspended to accommodate Lamichhane’s participation in international games. Despite spending time in custody, Lamichhane was released on bail and allowed to travel overseas. The court’s decision to release him on bail stirred controversy, as the charges against him involved serious offenses.
The case’s background reveals that Lamichhane was accused of raping a minor, leading to legal proceedings against him. The trial has faced repeated pauses and delays. Lamichhane’s defense argued for his participation in international matches, which further complicated the trial process. The victim’s accusations center on Lamichhane taking her to different locations in Bhaktapur and Kathmandu on August 21, the day before he left for a series with Kenya. She claims that he raped her multiple times in a hotel room on that night.
The case has attracted public attention and criticism, highlighting the importance of addressing the legal rights and protections of victims. The delays and complications in this case underscore the need for a fair and efficient justice system to ensure the safety and well-being of all parties involved.
