Tragedy Strikes Far Rockaway, Queens

In a devastating incident on Sunday morning, four lives were lost, including two children, and three others were injured in a stabbing and fire that unfolded in Far Rockaway, Queens. The tragedy occurred on December 3, leaving a community in shock and mourning.

Police responded to a distressing 911 call received shortly after 5 a.m. from a young female reporting that her cousin was attacking family members. The victims, believed to be family members, include an “11-year-old girl, a 12-year-old boy, a 44-year-old woman, and a man in his 30s,” all of whom succumbed to fatal stab wounds, according to the “New York City Police Department Chief Jeffrey Maddrey.”

Upon arriving at the residential block in Queens, officers confronted the suspect, a 38-year-old Bronx resident, who was leaving the scene with luggage. The assailant brandished a kitchen steak knife, attacking the officers. In self-defense, one of the officers fired, fatally incapacitating the suspect. Both officers incurred injuries that are not life-threatening, and they are anticipated to make a full recovery.

Maddrey commended the officers, highlighting their quick thinking and bravery in a challenging situation. “They could have easily let this person walk past them with his luggage. Instead, they stopped, asked a couple of questions, tried to get some intel before they walked right up in there,” he said.

Tragically, an 11-year-old girl found outside the house succumbed to her injuries. A subsequent fire in the living room and foyer area initially hindered access to the home, but fire officials swiftly extinguished the flames. Inside, three more victims were discovered, and police believe all four fatalities resulted from stab wounds.

Joseph Kenny, NYPD Chief of Detectives, revealed that a 61-year-old female is in critical condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital. The suspect, who had a prior arrest for a strangulation domestic violence incident in the Bronx, has been identified. While the incident appears to be family-related, investigations are ongoing.

This heart-wrenching event has left the community grappling with grief, as law enforcement works to piece together the details surrounding this tragic incident in Far Rockaway, a close-knit neighborhood along the shore of Long Island in the southernmost part of Queens, New York.
