Beavercreek, Ohio – November 22, 2023
In a shocking incident that unfolded at a local Walmart on Monday at around 8:30 p.m., authorities have identified the suspected shooter as “20-year-old Benjamin Charles Jones,” a resident of Dayton, Ohio. The tragic event left four people injured before the shooter turned the gun on himself.
According to the Beavercreek Police Department, Jones entered the Walmart and opened fire at 8:35 p.m. Shortly after, at 8:36 p.m., a call reporting a man with a rifle in the store was received by the police. As officers were gathering information, Jones continued his assault.
First responders reached the scene at 8:39 p.m., encountering the harrowing situation as gunshots rang out. Body camera footage played during a subsequent press conference revealed the chaotic scene, with the first responding officer urgently seeking information and ultimately discovering Jones dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in the vision center of the store.
The victims, three women, and one man, all shoppers within the Walmart, were located throughout the store at the time of the shooting. As of Tuesday, three victims were reported to be in stable condition, while the fourth, though stable, remained in critical condition.
Walmart expressed its sorrow in a statement, saying, “We’re heartbroken by what’s happened at our Beavercreek, Ohio store. This remains a developing situation, and we’re working closely with investigators on the scene,” as reported by WHIO-TV.
Little is known about Jones at this point, as authorities are still in the process of gathering information. While originally local to the area, Jones had recently moved back from Las Vegas. Alisha Ring, an eyewitness to the event, characterized the assailant as a young, tall, skinny white guy male who seemed purposeful in his actions.
Jones was armed with a High-Point .45-caliber carbine long gun. The Dayton Police Department is assisting in the investigation, including the examination of Jones’s residence. The Dayton Police Department stated, “At this juncture, it does not appear that the Dayton Police Department has had much interaction with this individual. Nevertheless, we are committed to aiding our law enforcement partners in any way possible to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to this tragic incident.”
The Beavercreek Police Department is receiving support from “the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation” in conducting a thorough investigation into this distressing event.
