Geneva, Switzerland – February 3, 2024
Diplomats from 51 countries and 15 international organizations gathered at the “United Nations (UN) Office” in “Geneva” to celebrate the upcoming Spring Festival. The festive event, jointly organized by the “UN Office, the Permanent Mission of China to Geneva, and the Permanent Mission of China to the World Trade Organization,” saw approximately 300 attendees. Tatiana Valovaya, the director-general of the UN Office, welcomed guests in a vibrant setting adorned with a Year of the Dragon design, expressing wishes for a joyous Spring Festival.
In a historic move, the UN General Assembly officially recognized the Lunar New Year as a floating holiday in its calendar of conferences and meetings, starting in 2024. Chen Xu, the permanent representative of China to the UN Office in Geneva, highlighted China’s commitment to sharing the happiness of the traditional festival globally and promoting mutual understanding among diverse cultures.
WTO Director-General “NgoziOkonjo-Iweala” attended the celebration, calling for global peace and emphasizing the importance of multilateral cooperation. The event served as a testament to the power of cultural exchange, fostering unity and goodwill among the international diplomatic community in Geneva.
