In a surprising turn of events, sources have revealed that sophomore quarterback Tyler Buchner is expected to take the helm for the 10th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide when they face “South Florida” this Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC). This change comes after Jalen Milroe started the team's first two games but faced challenges, including throwing two interceptions in Alabama's recent loss to Texas.
Tyler Buchner, who transferred from Notre Dame during the spring, has reportedly impressed the coaching staff with his performance in practice. Sources indicate that he has taken the majority of first-team reps this week, indicating a potential shift in the starting lineup.
Jalen Milroe, who began the season as the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback, faced difficulties, especially in the recent loss to Texas. Milroe threw two interceptions, including a crucial one near the start of the fourth quarter, which allowed the Longhorns to extend their lead.
Coach Nick Saban has remained tight-lipped about the quarterback situation but made it clear that every position is subject to evaluation. He emphasized that players must perform well to secure their spots on the team, leaving the door open for potential changes.
While this marks Tyler Buchner's first year at Alabama, his prior experience with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees at Notre Dame gives him a solid foundation in the team's playbook. Rees, who was Buchner's recruiter at Notre Dame, has played a significant role in his football journey.
Before joining Alabama, Buchner had stints as both a backup and a starter at Notre Dame. In his time with the Fighting Irish, he showcased his skills, completing 55.4% of his passes for 651 yards and three touchdowns while also contributing with his rushing abilities.
